As a flexible, open operating system, Linux brings extraordinary value to desktop and mobile developers.   The research firm International Data Corp. has estimated the presence of Linux in the traditional server and software markets at $18 billion with a projected growth to $40 billion by 2010. The market growth in these segments has dramatically increased the number of developers ready to write Linux-based applications.

This ecosystem of developers will become more and more important in the future as the connected home, the connected auto, the connected office—in which all devices communicate to one another wirelessly—become a reality.

By establishing Linux at the heart of the mobile communications industry, LiMo is making the pool of Linux developers around the world a new and vital resource for handset manufacturers, carriers, software developers and integrators.

Developer Benefits and Value Proposition

The LiMo Platform is based on well-known, widely-used, community-based open source software such as GTK+, Gstreamer, D-Bus, BlueZ, SQLite, etc.  The development environment is open and uses standard APIs and programming practices. 

For application developers of all backgrounds, LiMo will lower barriers to entry as the common LiMo code base across LiMo devices will enable applications to be easily ported across handsets and networks.  This will be enabled through release of LiMo SDKs for different mobile environments, such as native, Java and web technologies.  

The market opportunity for developers is substantial – amongst LiMo’s committed members there are 11 operators that represent over 1 billion subscribers, and several leading OEMs that collectively ship hundreds of millions of devices per year.  There are already 52 handset models on the market featuring LiMo technology – an important first step that will grow in size and sophistication in lock step with development of the LiMo Platform.
